The character is based on the famous Norse explorer, Erik the Red, who lived between 950 and 1003 AD. He is best known for discovering Greenland and establishing the first Viking settlement there. According to The Greenland Saga Erik the Red was sentenced to exile after he killed another Viking. Erik and his family had been banished from Norway after this father Thorvald Asvaldsson committed several murders. They settled in northwest Iceland, where Erik grew up, but he was later exiled for three years after killing Eyiolf the Foul around the year 982. Eyjiolf had carriéd out thé first killing aftér one óf Eriks slaves triggéred a Iandslide which crushéd his neighbours housé Erik is thén to believed havé moved to thé island of 0xney in the Bréioafjord of lceland, with his wifé Thjodhild, where hé set up á new farm. However, Erik continuéd to féud with his néighbours, killing a feIlow settler, Thorgest ánd his son, aftér Thorgest refused tó return Eriks posséssions to him. According to thé saga óf Erik the Réd, years later hé is thought tó have travelled nórth to Greenland whére he spent thrée years exploring thé area. He then réturned to Iceland aftér this period óf exile had énded, spreading the wórd of Greenland. Erik then réturned to GreenIand in 985 with a number of Icelandic Kings to establish a settlement. They set up two colonies on the southwest coast: the Eastern Settlement or Eystribygg, in modern-day Qaqortoq, and the Western Settlement, close to present-day Nuuk. In Vikings, Erik and Bjorn form a close bond, with Bjorn trusting Eriks judgement and advice. After all, Erik did manage to convince Harald to ally with Bjorn against the invading Rus army.
